Michael Jordan – one of the greatest basketball players ever – achieved amazing feats in NBA Championship games. Michael Jordan’s championship record is more impressive than a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat, except MJ did it six times. They came back from trailing 3-1 in the series against the Golden State Warriors, winning it in Game 7, and breaking a 52-year championship drought for the city of Cleveland. One of the most memorable NBA Championships happened in 2016 when LeBron James and the Cavaliers secured their first NBA title. Not just because it would mean shifting all my gear and rebuilding everything bit by bit, but because this stretch of clear blue water, as much as it unnerved me to sleep beneath it, felt like where I belonged. Later, when I found an environment that instinctively felt much more welcoming, I didn't move my home base. I built my first home in the friendly shallows, and disliked the idea of sleeping beneath the waves so much that I constructed a separate bedchamber above water level, with wide windows to let in the planetlight. Your habitat is another motivation to keep exploring, besides the occasional radio message prompting you to head out into the deep. It’s no accident that one of the first rooms you can build in your underwater habitat is an observatory. If Rust and its ilk are Darwinian games of survival by combat, Subnautica is Darwinian in a totally different sense, in that it is about discovery, science and nature. By degrees, you are overcoming fear not by fighting, but by understanding, by learning. Approaching angry creatures with a scanner, rather than a harpoon, lets you build expertise, knowledge and confidence, so that the dark of those underwater caves, which once made you shudder, now just makes you shrug. You’ll know which alien to salt and eat, and which alien wants to eat you. In time, you become a part of the ecology around you. This lack of weapons might be seen as a weakness of the player, but it isn’t a weakness of the game - it’s a virtue. In my time as a deep sea dilettante, I used neither of them. Later you will get a propulsion gun and some vehicles with semi-offensive torpedoes but even these feel like rarely-used scare tactics more than actual weaponry. Even this you will use to cut materials more often than to gut aliens. Upon landing in this unknown world, the most you're given to defend yourself with is a knife. On the survivalism scale, it is more gatherer than hunter. There are otherworldly “Blood Kelp” regions, caverns filled with giant glowing “jellyshrooms”, a richness of life, both hostile and harmless, that will keep the fearful-curious laughing nervously for weeks. These are just two examples of the variety in this huge ocean, and they aren't even the most interesting. But there is also something with tentacles. There’s a crash site in that Deep Grand Reef, stuffed with equipment and goodies. You can spend hours comfortably splashing about in the bright shallows, then take a 90-second foray among the red fauna of the grassy plateaus, where angry sharks will kick up sand and bully you all the way back to your pod.Įach biome has its own ecology of resources and risks – there may be diamonds in these subaquatic caves but something else lives here too, groaning loudly from the depths. This is not a game for thalassophobes, but it might be the perfect game for those on the cusp of that phobia – those who don’t trust the sea but are nevertheless enchanted by it. It doesn’t interfere with your daily fishing, instead giving you a focus, some extra motivation to stay alive on this vast blue expanse.Īnd expanse is definitely the right word. It’s a light story that encircles everything you do, like a friendly dolphin reminding you to check out this part of the sea, or dive down to that crash site. There’s also a radio in your pod which, once repaired, will get the game’s plot rolling. If you do croak it from drowning or from becoming fish fodder, you'll respawn back in your lifepod having lost some of your items (although it's somewhat random and inconsistent in this punishment). The environment and your lifepod contains everything you’ll need to stay alive. You’ve got a food and water meter (although these can be turned off in an easier mode), an oxygen meter and a health bar. But even now there are places I do not like to go.įor those yet to dip their toes, Subnautica’s survival is familiar. I’ve become a proficient scavenger, making the journey from trouserless idiot to Tom Hanks in Castaway’s third act. Today, I swim among these beasts, collecting vines and seed pods as they impotently pursue me through the weeds. I eyed the hazy green water of the nearby kelp forests with fear, knowing it was full of Stalkers, an aggressive fish whose body is mostly one long croc-like jaw. Last year, when I first splashed about in Subnautica’s alien ocean, I was wary of leaving the shallow reef in which you first crash land. The best survival games are about conquering fear. From the delegation he and his family were shocked to learn news of the undead raised by Holy Hilk Kingdom and their subsequent attack on the neighboring countries. Karlon was surprised to meet Princess Riel Nohzan Saureah, the daughter of his sister and his niece. King Karlon allowed the delegation an audience. Light Novel Volume 07 Īt Olav he received an unexpected visit from the elves, acting as envoys and escorts for the Nohzan Kingdom, a nation his country had toes with. When word of Tryton du Diento's death reach the capital of Olav, King Karlon held a meeting with his children and Prime Minister Bionissa du Jackell. In a political scheme to have an easier access to abundant rune stones and to mend a strained relationship with the Grand Duchy of Limburt, Karlon sent his eldest daughter Seriarna there to marry the Duke of Ticient. Karlon himself took a concubine who produced his son Sekt, the first prince and the first in line for the throne succession. However Melissa died before the beginning of the story. Not much is known for his coming as king of Rhoden, though his younger sister Melissa was sent to the Nohzan Kingdom to marry its (future) king, who was Riel Nohzan Saureah father. Fearing the elves will blockade abundant rune stone trade (what it will provoke the ire of the nobles) and their powerful soldiers who can strike everywhere and whenever thanks to Arc's teleportation, Karlon decides to enforce the law forbidding the possession and enslavement of beastmen and elves, in his kingdom. After the elves show of strength during the Hilk War (where Arc and two Dragon Lords decimate the undead) he understands it would be foolish to oppose the elves by enslaving them as humans do not nearly have the firepower. Through the story, he does not show any emotion even when Dakares was murdered or after the failed attempt of murder on his daughter. He is quite passive as he asks always advises from his children before making his move. However he seems also unaware of the terrible fight which is happening between his children for the Rhoden succession throne, a fight which cost him a son already, murdered under the direct order of his eldest son who also planned to assassinate his sister under the cover of bandit's accident. He seems to be more practical than turned in rightness at all cost like his daughter Yuriarna. He is a man with blond hair-marked with the occasional streak of white-thick beard, piercing blue eyes, and deep wrinkles etched into his forehead, giving him a rather gaunt appearance.Īt first, Karlon gives the impression of a calm and perceptive king. The government conceded that the reason for differential treatment was that it was cheaper and easier to presume wives as dependent on their husbands than to require husbands to prove their wife’s dependency. This would typically be granted automatically if a male applied for increased benefits for himself and his wife regardless of dependency status, but Frontiero was denied because she could not demonstrate that her husband was dependent on her for more than half of his support. The Court concluded that Idaho law violated Sally’s right to equal protection but stopped short of the application of strict scrutiny Ginsburg had argued for.Īir Force Lieutenant Sharron Frontiero sought increased housing and medical allowances for herself and her husband. In her amicus brief with the ACLU, Ginsburg argued that the law discriminating on the basis of sex created a suspect classification requiring strict scrutiny. The court rejected Sally’s request and issued letters of administration to Cecil based on the Idaho state law requiring when “several persons claiming and equally entitled to administer, males must be preferred to females.” Prior to her hearing date, Cecil filed a competing petition. Upon his death, Sally applied to the county court to be appointed administrator of her son’s estate. Sally and Cecil Reed shared custody of their adopted son, Skip. By relying on their antiquated 1992 guidelines and discarding medical evidence of significant intellectual disability, the CCA’s application of the death sentence for Moore was held to be in violation of the 8th Amendment prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment. “ The Briseno factors ‘create an unacceptable risk that persons with intellectual disability will be executed’”. In Ginsburg’s majority opinion, she incisively outlined the CCA’s errors. Moore appealed to the Supreme Court for relief. Despite testimony from several mental health experts and IQ tests that indicated “significantly sub-average general intellectual function”, the Criminal Court of Appeals (CCA) in Texas determined that under precedent established in a 1992 case, Ex Parte Briseno, Moore was not intellectually disabled and sentenced him to death. In 2009, Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which amended Title VII to reset the 180 day statute of limitations with each paycheck as Ginsburg had implored.īobby Moore fatally shot a store clerk during a botched robbery. She may have little reason even to suspect discrimination until a pattern develops incrementally and she ultimately becomes aware of the disparity.” She appealed to Congress to right the Court’s “cramped interpretation of Title VII”. Ginsburg dissented, “ Having received a pay increase, the female employee is unlikely to discern at once that she has experienced an adverse employment decision. The Supreme Court ruled that Ledbetter had filed her lawsuit too late: she had failed to file a complaint within 180 days of each instance Goodyear Tire failed to increase her pay at a rate commensurable with her male counterparts. Ledbetter sued, alleging that she was paid an unfairly low salary because of her sex, a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. After nearly 20 years at the company, she was paid over $500 per month less than the lowest paid male supervisor. However, her pay began to slip in relation to other supervisors over time. Lily Ledbetter was a supervisor at Goodyear Tire whose initial salary was in line with her male counterparts. Ginsburg wrote in an opinion that excluding all women based on " generalizations about ‘the way women are,’ estimates of what is appropriate for most women, no longer justify denying opportunity to women whose talent and capacity place them outside the average description.”Ģ007: Ledbetter v. Virginia challenged the order but the Supreme Court ruled that they had not demonstrated “exceedingly persuasive justification” for denying women equal opportunity. Since its 1839 inception, VMI admitted exclusively male cadets until the Justice Department ordered them to admit women in 1990. A few local production companies in my town seem to be using EDIUS too and asked about Vordio with EDLs for that reason.ĮDLs are not very rich in metadata compared to XMLs. This is mainly because Media Composer doesn't export XMLs and it is a common NLE. I am planning to support EDLs later though. I can't believe they downloaded Vordio for their personal use as none of them bought a license later on and 5 minute videos aren't enough for most people (the free version only does first 5 mins). It wouldn't surprise me if some have been reverse engineering Vordio. On the other hand, I have noticed a number of downloads by various companies that make other tools. They avoid common issues by introducing a manual correction stage, so you can find these mistakes before applying reconform. Vordio cannot reconform a project that was not converted using Vordio (the accuracy would be much less if I tried to implement that as the checking algorithms would not work at all). Vordio avoids some of the typical reconform mistakes with other tools by embedding information during the first conversion which is later used to double check for mistakes during reconform. The Nuendo video doesn't mention other features in Vordio's reconform such as 'locking' which are massively useful. The history is also quite interesting as Lord of the Rings had a crew member called 'Katy' who used to manually produce EDL change sets for the sound editors. I have spoken to some protools users since that have used it and so know about some of the quirks. It's funny but I only looked at Virtual Katy (and Conformalizer is another) after I had already added reconform to Vordio. Virtual Katy say they have Steinberg as a partner, so this is very likely. Looks almost identical to their approach which is based around EDL change sets. I suspect Steinberg have done a deal with Virtual Katy. (note: it uses EDL, which is pretty nice actually). Did you see that Nuendo has now a built in ReConform solution ? :) enamel lapel pin gay pride lgbtq+ library book lover bookworm reading literature education queer diversity inclusivity pin badge social justice activism rainbow lgbtqia equality empowerment empowerment fashion. Bureaucracyīureaucracy is a system of rules and procedures that are designed to make the operation of an organization or society as efficient, effective, and rational as possible.īureaucracy can be divided into two types:įormal bureaucratic systems have explicit written rules that are enforced by the organization’s hierarchical structure. The guidelines are written, followed, and enforced consistently from employee to employee. Max Weber’s type of bureaucracy is an administration that upholds the rules and regulations with strict adherence to protocol. He believed that a bureaucrat’s ideal type is the ultimate goal in order to avoid any corruption. Max Weber also created what he called the Ideal Type of Bureaucracy, which enabled him to study all aspects of bureaucracy more scientifically than had ever been done before then. He is known for his two major works – The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (1905) and The Theory of Social And Economic Organization (1920). Max Weber was a German sociologist who wrote extensively on authority, power, rationalization in society, and capitalism’s ability to create wealth for society. Max Weber believed that a bureaucrat’s ideal type is the ultimate goal in order to avoid any corruption. This machine-like organization has three main components: According to Max Weber, the ideal type of bureaucracy is one that can be described as a machine. It is a form of organizational management that has been developed to handle large organizations and their complex administrative tasks. According to Weber, an organization characterized by labor division, a clearly established hierarchy, comprehensive rules and regulations, and impersonal relations are ‘ideal bureaucracies.’ He realized that this ‘ideal bureaucracy‘ did not really exist but rather represented a selective reconstruction of the real world.īureaucracy is the social organization of rationalized authority. Bureaucracy is the use of written or oral rules and procedures to control an organization. Both almond and cashew milk are made in similar ways and with the same ingredients- water, and pure almond or cashew pieces. Unlike traditional milks, nut milks are not made using animals in any way. Read on to understand the difference and why you may choose one nut milk over the other. Whatever your reasoning, you may be wondering if you should choose almond or cashew milk on your next grocery run. Some people choose these alternatives because they are lactose intolerant or cannot consume animal milk, while others have ethical reasons for a vegan option. This trend shows no sign of stopping- reports from 2020 expect a 10% annual growth rate by 2024 in the plant-based milk market. Nut-based milks are one of the more popular choices in this category, with almond milk as the first pioneer and cashew milk following. Plant-based milks are more popular than ever, and a wide variety of options are available to choose from. |
